WINS Awarded Funding by Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

Following a competitive request for proposals, Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation today announced grants to 11 organizations to support projects aimed at reducing nuclear risk through innovative and solutions-oriented approaches.

A total of 83 proposals were received and, in selecting the 11 successful projects, special emphasis was placed on work that combines technical and foreign policy expertise, brings new voices to the field, fosters collaboration among multiple institutions, and integrates early-career experts.

“We sought out projects that could help reduce nuclear risk by demonstrating new approaches to existing problems, forging new and important collaborations, and producing ideas that governments and industry could act on,” said Emma Belcher, Director of MacArthur’s Nuclear Challenges program. “This innovative group of grantees represents those goals, and we look forward to seeing the impact of their work on this critical issue.”

Dr Roger Howsley, Executive Director of WINS, said, “We are delighted to have been selected by Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to conduct a comparative analysis of nuclear and aviation security; two sectors where it is essential that security arrangements are effectively implemented. We will be working with international colleagues1 from both sectors to identify and share good practices in international guidance and standards, peer review, training and certification, security management systems and culture. We are very excited to lead this ground-breaking work which aims to improve security in both sectors.”
