Thandeka Daka is a Nuclear and Radiation Technologist at Zambia’s Radiation Protection Authority. Her enthusiasm about WINS’ role in developing future nuclear security leaders has inspired her to become a WINS Academy Ambassador.
In this interview, she explains how her work as a frontline officer allows her to combine her technical knowledge with her passion for protecting the public. She notes that WINS Academy certifications have enhanced her skills with greater competence and a more structured mindset, as well as developing a sense of connection with other nuclear security professionals around the world.
What first inspired you to pursue a career in nuclear security and radiation protection?
My inspiration comes from both a passion for science and a strong sense of responsibility toward public safety. I was drawn to nuclear security and radiation protection because it is a field where technical knowledge directly contributes to protecting people, the environment, and national security. The idea of working in a space that requires precision, accountability, and constant vigilance motivated me to pursue this path, knowing that even small actions can have great impact.
As a frontline officer, what are some of the key challenges you encounter in ensuring nuclear security?
Working on the front line comes with the responsibility of making critical decisions in real time. One key challenge is detecting and responding to potential threats that are not always immediately visible, especially during vehicle or cargo screening. Distinguishing between benign and potentially dangerous sources can be difficult and complex. Additionally, adapting to evolving security threats while maintaining strict adherence to protocols requires continuous learning, alertness and continuous sensitisation. Despite these challenges, the role is highly rewarding because it directly contributes to national and international security.

How have WINS Academy certifications influenced your confidence and effectiveness in your current role?
WINS Academy certifications have played an important role in strengthening my professional capacity. They enhanced my understanding of international best practices and reinforced the importance of a strong security culture. This has improved my confidence in decision making, particularly in high-pressure situations. The knowledge gained has also allowed me to approach my responsibilities with greater competence and a more structured mindset, ultimately increasing my effectiveness in my field.
What makes the WINS Academy a valuable platform for career development?
WINS Academy stands out because it helps one understand the theoretical value of things by helping with real time situations through the examples that are given in the courses. The courses are practical, relevant, and aligned with the realities faced by nuclear security/safety professionals globally. It also fosters a sense of connection among professionals from diverse backgrounds, encouraging knowledge sharing and collaboration. This perspective, combined with recognised certification, makes it a powerful platform for both personal and professional growth.

How can initiatives like WINS help inspire and support the next generation of leaders?
Initiatives like WINS are essential in shaping future leaders by providing access to knowledge, mentorship, and professional networks. They create opportunities for young professionals, like they have for me, to build confidence and develop leadership skills early in their careers. By promoting inclusivity and highlighting world success stories, WINS inspires individuals to see themselves as contributors to global nuclear security. This kind of support not only builds capacity but also ensures the sustainability and evolution of the field.
