WINS Virtual Workshop: Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Strengthening the Security of Nuclear Facilities

10 December 2024 - 11 December 2024 Online, Selected Audience
Workshop on autonomous and remotely operated systems: Benefits and challenges to nuclear security

Background

Building on the success of our previous in-person workshop in February 2024, WINS is pleased to announce an online workshop focusing on the rapidly expanding role of artificial intelligence (AI) in strengthening the security of nuclear facilities.
AI is becoming integral to various sectors, including healthcare, finance, transportation, and government services. However, while AI is widely discussed, many decision-makers still lack a comprehensive understanding of these technologies—how they work, their benefits, risks, and potential unintended consequences.
AI has demonstrated immense potential to drive innovation, accelerate tasks, improve decision-making, and solve complex problems. But how does AI apply specifically to the nuclear industry, particularly in securing nuclear materials, processes, and facilities? What are the expected security benefits? What risks could arise? How should human oversight be balanced when assessing security incidents?
Nuclear operators and other security stakeholders are already investing in new approaches and advanced technologies to stay ahead of evolving threats. But what stance should they adopt towards AI? How can they deepen their understanding and effectively integrate AI into their security programs? What are the prerequisites and challenges—including legal and ethical considerations—for successful AI implementation?
To explore these critical questions, WINS is organizing an international online workshop. This event will bring together nuclear security professionals, AI experts, and thought leaders to discuss AI's application in physical security within the nuclear industry.

Objectives

This online workshop will build on the findings of our previous session and review the latest advancements in AI applications for physical security in nuclear facilities. It will explore how AI can enhance security by improving threat detection, monitoring, and response capabilities. Key topics will include:

  • Video Surveillance and Monitoring (Facial Recognition, Object Detection, Behavioral Analysis)
  • Intrusion Detection (Data Integration, Anomaly Detection, Pattern Recognition)
  • Response (Automated Alerts, Scenario Prediction, Real-time Situational Awareness)
  • Open-Source Intelligence (Information Gathering, Threat Assessment)
  • Education (Personalized Training, Tailored Exercises)
  • Legal and Ethical considerations
  • AI applications in Cyber Security

Participants will gain insights from those already using AI to enhance security, both within and outside the nuclear sector. This workshop will also provide a platform to discuss strategies for identifying and integrating AI-based technologies into existing security programs, as well as share lessons learned and best practices from other industries.
Additionally, the workshop will address challenges and pitfalls in AI adoption and propose solutions for overcoming these hurdles.

Audience

This workshop is open to participants worldwide. We encourage attendance from:

  • Regulators and governmental organizations
  • Nuclear operating organizations
  • Leading research institutions in advanced security technologies
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Security experts, consultants, and vendors
  • International governmental organizations

Representatives from other critical infrastructure sectors are also invited to share their experiences and perspectives.
WINS is committed to promoting gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in all its events. We strongly encourage women and individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate and contribute to the discussions.

Process

Consistent with WINS' approach to international online workshops, this event will be highly interactive and professionally facilitated. The workshop will feature presentations from expert speakers and breakout sessions to allow participants to delve deeper into topics and share their experiences and insights.
The workshop will be conducted in English and, as with all WINS events, discussions will be unclassified but subject to Chatham House rules (information shared can be reported but not attributed).
