PNS Congratulates Dr. Yakubu Viva Ibrahim, World’s First WINS Academy Graduate!

The Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS) congratulates Dr. Yakubu Viva Ibrahim, reactor physicist at Ahmadu Bello University’s (ABU) Center for Energy Research and Training, on being the first graduate of the World Institute Nuclear Security (WINS) Academy program. The WINS Academy is the first online certification program for nuclear security management, which aims to improve worldwide leadership and effectiveness in the implementation and regulation of nuclear security.

Dr. Ibrahim describes the WINS Academy as “rich, covering everything from case studies to nuclear security culture to illicit trafficking.” He emphasized that the exposure to this range of topics changed his perspective, requiring that he consider not only nuclear safety but nuclear security on a routine basis, as well.

Dr. Ibrahim will share his success with colleagues at ABU through nuclear security workshops and seminars. These activities, he believes, will motivate colleagues to pursue WINS certification.  Similarly, he will introduce new nuclear security modules into his courses, so that students improve their awareness and understanding. For Dr. Ibrahim, nuclear security culture involves everyone.

“Whether you’re a scientist, manager or administrator, we all play a role in ensuring a safe and secure working environment.”

The WINS Academy provides personnel with management accountabilities for nuclear security with opportunities to become professionally certified. The educational design consists of a Foundation Module and eight separate elective programs for different stakeholders. The program can be completed entirely online, and candidates can sit the certification exams at over 5,000 test centers in 175 countries. Computer-based testing means that the exams can be taken on-demand, allowing greater flexibility for professionals with accountabilities for nuclear security around the world.

In partnership with PNS, WINS has made a scholarship program available in certain countries, through which selected participants gain access to WINS Academy programs and exams at no cost. For more information about scholarships, visit the website or contact WINS at thewinsacademy@wins.org.
