Meet a New WINS Academy Ambassador: Osama Natsheh

“It’s very important to combine safety and security in the nuclear field.”

Osama Natsheh, Head of the R&D Department in Industrial Gamma Irradiation at the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, talks about how the WINS Academy programme developed his understanding of nuclear security and why he wants to encourage others to participate.

What inspired you to become a WINS Academy Ambassador?

The WINS Academy changed my ideas about my work. After 20 years of working in nuclear safety, I now have a security mindset because of the nuclear security culture that I learned from WINS. It’s very important to combine safety and security in the nuclear field.

Because of that I became a WINS Academy Ambassador. I want to share what I learned and send a message about how the WINS Academy is very important to the nuclear worker.

Why is demonstrable competence important in nuclear security?

Demonstrable competence is very important in nuclear security, which is recognised in international instruments, references in the IAEA Nuclear Security Series and WINS publications, regulatory assurance measures and benchmarking with other industries.

“The WINS Academy changed my ideas about my work.”

What was your WINS Academy elective? Why did you choose it?

I have two WINS Academy certificates, one in Radioactive Source Security Management and the other in Transport Security Management. I choose these modules because I was manager of a radioactive waste storage facility, and one of my responsibilities was transporting the radioactive waste.

How can nuclear security professionals promote robust security culture?

By reading about new technology, attending training courses and meeting to exchange information.

What advice do you have for current WINS Academy learners or those considering enrolling?

I advise the current WINS Academy learners to practice what they have learned and continue reading WINS and IAEA publications.

From the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission:

“He added the nuclear security point of view.”

How has your organisation benefitted from Osama achieving Certified Nuclear Security Professional status?

Osama wrote the procedures for the radioactive waste storage facility, in addition to the transport plan for fresh fuel and the research reactor decommissioning plan. In writing these studies, he added the nuclear security point of view. He also also contributed to meaningful discussions within the company that developed nuclear security at the facility.
