Regional Training Course on Information Security and Cybersecurity for Nuclear and Other Radioactive Material and Facilities

03 February 2025 - 06 February 2025
Applications for this event are closed
Workshop on autonomous and remotely operated systems: Benefits and challenges to nuclear security

Background

Nuclear and other radioactive material facilities, like all organizations, are facing unparalleled levels of digital transformation. The dependence of nuclear and other radioactive material facilities on digital systems is increasing dramatically. This includes the integration of digital systems into everything from business systems to nuclear safety and security systems. This, coupled with the current and planned development of new facilities, has reinforced the need to develop strong programs and human capacity for addressing the growing and changing cyberthreat landscape.
Information and cybersecurity is the protection of information and associated digital systems against malicious acts. Specifically, Information and cybersecurity seeks to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data and when applicable, the digital systems used to store and process such data. Along with physical protection, information and cybersecurity needs to be part of the overall security strategy at nuclear and other radioactive material facilities.

Objectives

The objective of this four-day regional in person training course is to:

  • build awareness of the cyberthreat;
  • discuss the information security and cybersecurity program implementation;
  • review operator experience and industry good practices; and
  • build competence in information and cyber security incident response.

Furthermore, the course aims to provide radiological facilities with a technical introduction to cybersecurity topics related to the physical security systems protecting their radioactive material.

The course also serves as a venue for information sharing related to implementing information and cybersecurity as well as developing a security-aware culture at nuclear and other radioactive material facilities.

Audience

The target audience recommended to take advantage of this course is:

  • National Computer Security Emergency Response Organizations
  • Competent Authorities with nuclear security responsibilities
  • Site Security Officers
  • Radiation Safety Officers, or other staff who have responsibility for the security of nuclear and other radioactive material (e.g. radioactive sources)
  • IT or cybersecurity staff with responsibility for networks and systems used to protect radioactive sources/nuclear material/ associated facilities and activities
  • Security vendors or staff who installed or maintain physical protection systems
  • Operators/licensees of nuclear and other radioactive material facilities
