Workshop on autonomous and remotely operated systems: Benefits and challenges to nuclear security

Background

WINS designed its Gender Champions Programme in 2018 to promote a diverse and inclusive nuclear security workforce and support the full participation of women in the sector. The programme is supported by the Government of Canada and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.

WINS is an International Gender Champion and a Gender Champion for Women in Nuclear Policy. WINS is in active partnership with Women in Nuclear, Global as well as the Group of Friends for Women in Nuclear, a group of Vienna-based Ambassadors who advocate for greater representation of women in nuclear.

The WINS Gender Programme is designed around outreach efforts to advance its key objectives, which include increasing female participation to 30% by the end of 2020.

The Government of Norway has funded WINS to increase the professional participation of women from OECD ODA countries in radioactive source security management in order to build capacity and strengthen and sustain radioactive source security through the development of a diverse and inclusive workforce.

One of the ways that WINS intends to achieve this goal is to promote greater professional participation in radioactive source security management by exposing a wider audience to women leaders and subject matter experts in specific fields.

In Part 1 of the webinar series, two female experts in radioactive source security discussed how they developed their skills in their respective roles how they got started and how they applied the acquired new skills.

Objectives

  • What does it take to secure radioactive sources? Why do it?
  • What is the Gender diversity situation today? Is there room for improvement? If so, where?
  • What types of roles are there in the sphere of “radioactive source security”?
  • What are the most common types of formal education of professionals in this space today and which others can make the move towards a career in this space? –
  • What are some key skills and type of knowledge for each role?
  • How can WINS support the enhancement of skills for women undertaking different roles within radioactive source security?
