Workshop on autonomous and remotely operated systems: Benefits and challenges to nuclear security

Background

WINS organised a workshop on Countering Violent Extremism and the Insider Threat in the Nuclear Sector in London, UK from 03-05 December 2019 with the objective to:

  • Provide participants with a better understanding of the processes leading to radicalisation and violent extremism; identify and discuss the motivation, intention and capabilities of HVEs; and review real-life examples and applicable case
  • Identify and explore the role of different stakeholders involved in the identification and mitigation of such threats with specific reference to the nuclear sector.
  • Review the current measures to help ensure the reliability of personnel accessing critical areas and information in the nuclear
  • Discuss whether the nuclear sector and its employment arrangements have any features that make it more or less vulnerable to becoming a VE
  • Discuss how to test the resilience of the security systems, including information sharing among different
  • Understand best practices in countering VE threats from other sectors, including sensitive industries and critical

This workshop was a continuation of series of events WINS has held on the topic of external and internal threats to nuclear facilities. It was aiming to review the latest information on radicalisation and VE matters and to listen to the experience gained by those who are implementing security arrangements at nuclear facilities and other critical infrastructure.

Objectives the Webinar

The purpose of the webinar was to report on main discussions and key findings of the workshop. It was an opportunity to review and discuss the VE threat, explore some potential mitigation measures and listen to participants’ opinions and comments.
