This is why it is crucial for an organisation to understand that certain people may use their access, authority or knowledge for the purpose of causing harm or disruption or they may facilitate others to do harm by providing them with assistance. It is important for an organisation to understand and recognise this threat and consider how to prepare for this and mitigate the risk through an insider threat mitigation programme (ITMP).
The aim of this Guide is to define insider threat, describe the types of insider threat, consider the targets that must be protected, understand the measures for prevention of, and protection from, insider threats and to provide an overview of the purpose and core components of an ITMP.
This Guide also addresses the significance of leadership, culture and assurance factors within an organisation that are critical to effective insider threat mitigation and support the design, implementation and evaluation of an ITMP.
This Guide also contains a Self-Assessment Questionnaire that you can use to answer questions about different aspects of insider threat mitigation and how it is implemented at your organisation.
