About Comfort

Comfort Offornedu is a Superintendent of Corps in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Headquarters, Abuja. She currently serves as the Sectional Head, Emergency Preparedness & Response Section, in the Disaster Management Department (DMD) of the Crisis Management Directorate Ms. Offornedu is a Certified Nuclear Security Professional (CNSP) who is committed to advancing the safety and security of nuclear and radioactive materials worldwide. She became a member of the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) in 2016 She has served as an Ambassador for the WINS Academy since 2020, with her appointment consistently renewed in recognition of her dedication and impact. In this role, Ms. Offornedu, has actively promotes WINS academy certification programmes, encourages capacity building among professionals, and supports the adoption of international best practices in nuclear security. Comfort has dutifully carried out these responsibilities over the years through advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and continuous professional outreach. Ms. Offornedu has successfully completed key WINS Academy programmes, including the Foundation Module and Nuclear Security Incident Management. She is also a regular contributor to WINS Ambassador Annual Assemblies, where She delivers presentations and engages with global stakeholders. Driven by a strong belief that nuclear security is a shared global responsibility, Comfort has continued to champion professional competence, a robust nuclear security culture, effective communication and collaborative efforts toward a safer and more secure world.

Description

Comfort Offornedu is a Superintendent of Corps in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Headquarters, Abuja. She currently serves as the Sectional Head, Emergency Preparedness & Response Section, in the Disaster Management Department (DMD) of the Crisis Management Directorate. Ms Offornedu is first-ever and current NSCDC Desk Officer for Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON). She works with ISPON through the National Committee on Safety Ethics Compliance and Enforcement to ensure the establishment, training and empowering of the NSCDC’s ISPON Safety Standards and Regulations Compliance And Enforcement Team, Nationwide. Among others Between 2012 and December 2024, Comfort served as the Commander, Radiological and Nuclear Section of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Department, NSCDC, National Headquarters, Abuja. Her work focuses on issues of emergency response, environmental and physical security with special emphasis on the CBRNE safety and security. Comfort has special interest in CBRN emergency response where she operates as a frontline officer and educator; training many CBRN first responders, both at local and international levels. She began her career as a young female Physicist in 2010, becoming a first responder in the CBRNE Department of NSCDC. Over the years, Ms Offornedu has represented NSCDC and Nigeria in several conferences, workshops, reviews, and training, both locally and internationally. Besides being a certified Instructor by the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), she is also a Fellow, School on Radiation Technologies, World Nuclear University (WNU) and an Ambassador for World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) Ms Offornedu was the first elected General Secretary of Women in Nuclear (WiN), Nigeria chapter, and has been active in mentoring women in CBRN emergency response; nuclear energy and radiation applications. Ms Offornedu holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Physics from the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Nigeria, as well as Master’s degree in Radiation and Medical Physics from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Nigeria. Currently, she is running her second Masters in Nuclear Engineering with focus in Radiation Waste Management and Decommissioning (RWMD) at Institut Mines-Telecom (IMT) Atlantique Bretagne, France and Universidad Politécnica De Madrid (UPM), Spain. She is fluent in English.
