Workshop on autonomous and remotely operated systems: Benefits and challenges to nuclear security

Background

WINS hosted a new theatre production in Vienna on 12 February 2020. The production, titled “Pay Up or Melt Down”, centred on a cyber-crisis at the fictional Sweetwater Nuclear Power Plant.Ten years ago, WINS initiated this innovative, theatre-based approach to training for personnel with accountabilities for nuclear security. Scenarios are performed by professional actors to demonstrate the consequences security events could have on nuclear facilities – from the highest levels of corporate management to the people on the frontline – and civil society.

Objectives

The production, titled “Pay Up or Melt Down”, centred on a cyber-crisis at the fictional Sweetwater Nuclear Power Plant. It was designed to allow the audience to experience the power of theatre to challenge thinking and stimulate action.

Audience

More than 100 diplomats, representatives of government and other conference attendees from over 20 countries joined together to enjoy a thought-provoking evening of theatre that examined issues and attitudes regarding nuclear security.

Process

Sponsored by the Government of Canada and performed by AKT Productions (London), the show explored misconceptions about cybersecurity and the importance of effective oversight by senior management. Between scenes, a professional facilitator guided discussions with the audience about the topics raised in the play.
