Meet a New WINS Academy Ambassador: Dania Soguero

“Good training in this field helps us […] to protect the nuclear material and radioactive sources that we use in the peaceful production of nuclear energy.”

Dania Soguero, Radiological Protection Officer at the Centre of Technological Applications and Nuclear Development in Cuba, discusses the importance of comprehensive training and knowledge sharing to promote nuclear security.

What advice do you have for current WINS Academy learners or those considering enrolling?

Nuclear safety and security are very important for our countries, hence good training in this field helps us in our performance and to protect the nuclear material and radioactive sources that we use in the peaceful production of nuclear energy.

What role do alumni play locally to promote nuclear security and demonstrable competence within their country and institutional network?

Local graduates of the WINS Academy programme can help to train staff within their own organisation, as well as conducting refresher workshops and seminars on relevant topics to keep skills up to date.

How do local and international networks help nuclear security professionals strengthen practices and systems in their own institution?
Social networks maintain communication between specialists, so they can update each other on new developments and share their experiences as well as best practices. Specialists can also complete distance training or promote online courses within their networks.

What was your WINS Academy elective? Why did you choose it?

I chose Radioactive Source Security Management because my work centres on radiation protection and I work directly with radioactive sources.

What inspired you to become a WINS Academy Ambassador?

I wanted to take the opportunity as to share my experiences and promote training courses.

From CEADEN:

How has your organisation benefitted from Dania achieving Certified Nuclear Security Professional status?

Firstly, their learning will allow the safe development of practices with radiation sources at CEADEN to support research and technological innovation projects. In addition, having a specialist achieving Certified Nuclear Security Professional status is essential because CEADEN promotes the applications of nuclear techniques in Cuba, offering advice on radiation protection, and sometimes lends its support to Latin American nations.

“Obtaining the WINS certificate is an example of personal improvement to be followed.”

What role does WINS certification play in your institution’s professional development programme?

CEADEN encourages its specialists to obtain international certificates. Obtaining the WINS certificate is an example of personal improvement to be followed by all the specialists of our organisation.

This certificate gives prestige and brings visibility to CEADEN as a science institution at the international level.
