WINS Nuclear Security Essay Contest

Winners Announced for the WINS 2010 Nuclear Security Essay Contest

In order to generate new ideas and insights into the field of nuclear security and help WINS pursue its vision and mission, WINS created an essay contest for both professionals and students. The contest concluded on April 9, 2010. We were pleasantly surprised at the number of entries that we received for the contest, and wish to thank everyone who participated. Selecting the winning essays out of so many worthy submissions was difficult, and even those essays not selected provided us with valuable ideas and insights.

The winning essays can be read in a WINS special publication titled Closing the Gap: A Collection of Essays on Nuclear Security. Enter the Members' Area to gain access.

Grand Prize Winners

The Grand Prize Winner in the professional essay contest is Malcolm Clark, a WINS member and security manager at Dounreay Site Restoration Limited. Malcolm’s essay, entitled Security is More than Onion Rings, demonstrates that security is a multi-dimensional discipline and that WINS has an important role in improving security at all levels of an organisation.

The Grand Prize Winner in the student essay contest is Steven Ward, also a WINS member. Steven is a PhD student in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Utah and works for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as a co-op student. Steven’s essay, entitled Making Security Protect More, uses a narrative and conversational structure to lay out the case for a strong nuclear security culture.

Malcolm and Steven will be invited to present their essays at a special WINS event to be held in Vienna, Austria, during the 2010 IAEA General Conference. They will also receive a monetary prize of €1,000 and lead publication in the WINS Special Volume on Nuclear Security - to be made available in the Members Area in the coming months.
